Sony has confirmed a notable price increase across all PlayStation 5 models in the United States, effective August 21, 2025. The base PlayStation 5 (disc edition) now costs $549.99, up from $499.99, the PS5 Digital Edition is now $499.99 (previously $449.99), and the flagship PS5 Pro climbs to $749.99.
According to Sony, the decision comes amid “a challenging economic environment.” The company cited inflation, currency fluctuations, and new tariffs on Japanese electronics as the main reasons. While Sony previously absorbed these costs, they can no longer shield consumers without raising prices.
This move aligns with a broader industry trend of rising gaming costs. Earlier this year, Microsoft raised Xbox console prices, and Nintendo also hiked the cost of Switch consoles and accessories. Until now, Sony had avoided raising PS5 prices in the U.S., keeping hikes limited to other regions.
If you’re planning to buy a PlayStation 5, now might be the last chance to grab one at the older price. Major retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and Target may still have units in stock at pre-hike prices—but supplies are expected to run out quickly.
